Johanna Mazibuko celebrated her 128th birthday last Wednesday surrounded by family and friends in Klerksdorp.

North West local government officials were also present to celebrate the occasion.

Mazibuko is believed to be the oldest person in the world, a record yet to be confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records.

But this hasn’t stopped the local community rallying behind efforts to preserve Mazibuko’s legacy.

OJ Madikong, a village prophet, told JacaNews he’s been friends with Mazibuko for over five years.

“We believe she should have long been added to the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest person in the universe.

“Even on the 11th [of May] when she celebrated 128 [years], the local municipality staged the whole celebration. We have been speaking to local government. The MEC for Social Development was also present and they promised to do all in their powers to try and increase the level of looking after old people and also help in trying to see mama Mazibuko listed in the Guinness Book of Records,” Madikong added.

According to Madikong, Mazibuko’s secret to a long life is simple.

“But if you give her a call, you will wonder because you will think you are talking to a 20-year-old woman. She’s very bright and fluid in speaking, it’s that she can’t walk.

“This woman is telling a lot of stories. One of the stories she’s telling is that in their times they did not go for sex before they were married. Another thing, they were eating natural food, not genetically modified ones and another thing, they respected their old people and their parents. She says those are the things that make them live very long,” Madikong explained.

It’s understood two of her eight children are also still alive - both above the age of 80.
