Klawer man in court for killing boy (13)

A 56-year-old man from Klawer on the West Coast appeared in the local
magistrate’s court on Monday in connection with the murder of a 13-year-old
boy.

Daniel Smit was charged after the mutilated body of 13-year-old Jerobiojin van Wyk's was found in a sewer pipe at Smit's house in the town last week.
It’s alleged by community members that Smit drove over the 13-year-old and then took him away after the boy and his friend were picking mangoes on Smit’s property.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Eric Ntabazalila says Smit is facing an array of charges, including defeating the ends of justice.
“He’s charged with murder kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice.
“The case has postponed to the 26th of April 2022 for further investigation.”
Ntabazalila says Smit’s lawyer has indicated that he does not intend to apply for bail.
“However, if he does apply for bail, the state will oppose the application.”
