A KwaDabeka police officer is facing a charge of murder after he allegedly beat his elderly mother to death in Clermont, west of Durban.
He is accused of assaulting his 70-year-old mother and locking her inside their family home.
Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says the elderly woman's helper and grandchild, who are believed to have escaped through a window, called for help.
"Upon arrival, they found a 46-year-old-man busy assaulting the victim. The victim sustained multiple injuries on the body and was taken to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The suspect was arrested for murder."
The officer appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza's condemned the brutal attack on Greta Xaba.
"What is also disturbing is the fact that our communities there were aware that the old lady was abused by her biological son but they were unable to help her," says the department's spokesperson Mhlabunzima Memela.
"Some indicated that they had fear because the man was a police officer and they were also scared that if they intervene, he will actually attack them."
