Spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said Siboniso Mthembu was sentenced on Monday. He was convicted of rape after the court heard how he raped a 21-year-old student of University of Zululand in 2012, Zwane said.

On January 27, 2012 at around 6pm the woman was waiting for her friend who was supposed to help her find a place to live in the Mthunzini area .

“She was approached by the accused who offered to help her and took her to some rooms where he raped her,” Zwane said.

A case of rape was opened at the Mthunzini police station and after investigations, Mthembu was identified and arrested, he said.

Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the police for thoroughly investigating the case and for sending a “well prepared docket” to court.

“We will always work hard to bring the criminals to book who abuse vulnerable and defenceless women and children,” she said in a statement. -ANA
