The province’s Department of Education says the girl, who attends Mnyamana Primary School in Bulwer, was refused entry to the school grounds because she was not wearing a mask.

She was subsequently raped on her way back to school and taken to the clinic by the principal.

KZN police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele says the 17-year old was arrested on Tuesday.

"It is alleged on Monday at 8am, a 12-year-old girl was raped by an unknown suspect while at Mahohoho area in Donnybrook.

“The police started investigating a case and a 17-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday morning with the help of the community.”

Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu says the department is trying its best to support the victim.

"As a department, we are giving the learner the socio-psychological support and we condemn this barbaric and painful act by the perpetrator.”
