KZN govt identifies 19 buildings to house flood victims

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube says a lack of land and the
impact of climate change have delayed the provision of housing for flood
victims.
Dube-Ncube gave an update on Sunday morning on the province’s recovery from the April floods.
The floods, which left more than 400 people dead, also left some 4 0000 families without a roof over their heads.
The premier said the city has now acquired private and government-owned buildings which will be renovated for a rental accommodation scheme.
“We have identified a place with 50 rooms. In that building I have personally visited a couple of times and spoke with the owners, also keeping the resident abreast of the relocation.
“We have 19 buildings that we are looking at as temporary emergency accommodation for our communities in these facilities are currently not being utilised.”
Dube Ncube says climate change could further delay the process.
“We are faced with the reality of climate change as a result of that, we must be mindful that many of the construction that are happening now, as we approach the rainy season might be delayed and might be disturbed.”
