A 52-year-old man from KwaMoya in KwaZulu-Natal has been shot and killed by police after he stabbed his brother to death with a spear.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Grace Langa says the 52-year-old, who is believed to have been a mental patient, broke into his younger brother’s residence.
“The 52-year-old deceased, a mental patient from KwaMoya, Umbumbulu area, forcefully entered a house where his younger brother sleeps. He had a spear and stabbed his brother seven times in the chest."
“He then left the house to his mud room. The police were summoned and tried to calm him down in order to arrest him , (but) he resisted.”
A hostage negotiator and the special task force was then called to try calm the situation.
“The man came out of his room and advanced towards the negotiator with a spear in his hand, that’s when a police officer shot him.”
The man died at the scene.
