Lamola lauds late Mabuza as community builder

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola described the late former deputy president David Mabuza as a congressman dedicated to community development.

Mabuza died at the age of 64 in a Johannesburg hospital on Thursday.
Lamola spoke to the SABC News outside Mabuza's home in Bryanston.
"He understood and loved the ANC, he was a mobiliser, a community builder, and obviously we had our own challenges, but those challenges with him also strengthened us, it has built resilience in us, but it's part of politics."
Lamola, also an ANC NEC member, said Mabuza has left a lasting legacy.
"Indeed, he lived a life as a congressman, and liked to work with young people in the province, and understood the plight of many people, and indeed we have lost a great South African."
In Mpumalanga, Mabuza has been praised for his dedication to service delivery during his tenure as premier.
This includes building schools and other community projects.
Mabuza’s political career began in student activism, and he became a driving force in building ANC structures in Mpumalanga, where he later served as premier from 2009 to 2018.
He was later elected Deputy President of the ANC in 2017 and served as Deputy President of the Republic until 2023.
