Lamola: NPA must rid itself of ‘self-created shenanigans’

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola says the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) can no longer afford to be derailed by “self-created shenanigans”.

Lamola addressed an NPA conference for senior public prosecutors in Benoni on Tuesday.

“It is an open secret that this organisation has been at the forefront of our citizenry’s mistrust for law enforcement agencies,” Lamola said.

“It therefore goes without saying that your most urgent task is to restore the credibility of this organisation, the consequence of that will be the restoration of public sympathy.”

High Court sets aside Mkhwebane's #CR17 report

In her 2019 report, Mkwebane found that Ramaphosa deliberately misled Parliament when he answered a question on a R500 000 donation to the campaign from late Bosasa boss Gavin Watson. She found that Ramaphosa breached the executive code of ethics and that there was a reasonable suspicion of money laundering.

He added: “Be resilient, never allow yourselves to be broken, remember that South Africans look up to you for a better and prosperous country from criminality, looting of state resources and violations against women and children.”

Lamola also urged the NPA to be more focused on the underlying drivers of crime.

“Instead of a prosecution which enforced persecution, we now needed a prosecution that could be responsive to community concerns, a prosecution with more accountability and democratic. We needed a prosecution that is more focused on the underlying drivers of crime and historic socio-economic deprivation.”
