Land invasion chaos escalates in Lenasia

Protests against land invasions have erupted in Lenasia, with some community members asking authorities to remove those erecting shacks on privately-owned land.

Protestors placed rocks and burning tyres along the K43 on Tuesday.

Community member Gugu Manana says land grabs are causing property values to depreciate.

"We are taxpayers and our houses are on bonds. The illegal erection of shacks depreciates the value of our houses. They also open our area to cable theft and illegal electricity connections which will extend dangers around the area. Which toilets are they going to use? This is not banana land."

Manana says racial tensions are also escalating as a result of the land invasions.

"Yesterday, we had to bring down three shacks because it escalated to a racial issue. The people invading land have threatened to come and attack the Indian community and we did not want that. Hence we have taken to the streets and yet the government has not come here to address the issue."

Manana says on Monday three buses full of people arrived in Lenasia and started invading land and erecting shacks.

Police say they have been monitoring the protest since Monday, but have not made any arrests.

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minaar confirmed that a meeting between the community and representatives from the City of Johannesburg representatives was due to take place.
