Lanxess mine unsure when production will restart
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Lanxess Chrome mine says it will possibly only resume production next week while it waits for employees to recover.
The mine and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) reached an agreement to bring an end to the nine-day long underground sit-in on Thursday afternoon.
At least 12 mines fainted and needed medical attention after some 200 Numsa members refused to surface in protest against sexual harassment at the mine as well as a variety of other issues.
Lanxess spokesperson Ben Marais say the main priority is the welfare of the workers.

"It can't be expected that people come up from underground after this and just resume again so we haven't even spoken about that at the moment. For the weekend nothing will happen."
Marais says there are certain regulatory conditions that the mine has to comply with before starting work.
"It still needs to be seen when exactly we resume operations so, for now, we wish our people to have a rest and a little bit of recuperation and recovery and spend time with their families."
