Latest crime stats: Murder up by 22%, rape by 14%

The South African Police Service released the crime statistics for the fourth quarter of 2021/2022 financial year in Parliament on Friday morning.
The stats show an increase in the murders committed between January to March compared to the same time last year.
The police’s head of crime research Norman Sekhukhune briefed Parliament’s police committee.
The three months under review saw an increase of 1 107 murders committed in the country, compared to the previous quarter, taking the overall number of murder cases to 6 083.
That is an increase of 22.2%.
A total of 1300 more people were raped compared to the same period last year, which represents an increase of 13.7%.
There was also an increase in carjacking, cash-in-transit robberies, farm murders, police killings as well as sexual offences.
Sekhukhune said the most murders were committed in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.
"The top three stations for murder are in KwaZulu Natal, uMlazi, Inanda, Plessislaer, followed by five in Western Cape Harare, Delft, Kraaifontein, Mfuleni, Khayelitsha, and Kagiso in Gauteng including Mthatha in Eastern Cape."
