Leadership woes adding to Eskom crisis - analyst
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Independent energy analyst Chris Yelland says the leadership vacuum at Eskom has added to the long-standing problems at the utility.
On Tuesday, Eskom reported a net loss after tax of R23.9 billion for the 2022/23 financial year, up from R12 billion in the previous financial year.
The utility presented its annual results for the year ending March 31 in Johannesburg.
The losses was partly due to Eskom implementing 280 days of load shedding this year, compared to 65 days last year.
Higher stages of load shedding, burning of more diesel and the ballooning municipal debt also played a role.
Eskom has since appointed Mteto Nyati as the board chairperson after the short-lived term of Mpho Makwana.
Earlier this year Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter also resigned.
Yelland says leadership instability at Eskom is adding to Eskom's troubles.
"It is true to say a lack of leadership has played a role, the board was very severely depleted and the Public Entreprises Minister had delayed appointing a new board, and virtually we had nobody left on the board.
"I think the depletion of leadership at board level, during the last two years has played a role in Eskom dismal performance."
