Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi believes churches which use schools as venues for services pose a health risk to pupils.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Tuesday that religious gatherings will be allowed during level 3 of the lockdown.

Lesufi visited schools in Ekhuruleni on Wednesday to check on their readiness to resume the academic year on Monday.
He said the issue of religious gatherings at school will be reviewed by the provincial government.
"The majority of our schools are used by churches and the arrangements we have made, imagine…on Monday learners must come to school, so we are trying mechanisms to manage that as well.
"We are not saying churches mustn't come, but we know the risk if they worship in our schools and we want to speak to the leadership of the church to make sure they understand that the situation has now changed."
He also announced that the cleaning and sanitising of Ekhuruleni schools in preparation for the resumption of the school year is complete.
