Schools throughout the country will reopen on Monday, with grades 7 and 12s the first to resume the academic year.

Schooling came to an abrupt halt in March as the country instituted a lockdown in an attempt to curb the coronavirus pandemic.

However, a school in the West Rand will remain closed after 162 minors in the immediate vicinity contracted Covid-19.

Speaking during a visit to Randburg Clinic School in the north of Johannesburg on Thursday, Lesufi said more still needs to be done to prepare for the resumption of the academic year.

"We are almost there, we're not there yet. There is still a lot we need to do but I think under the circumstances we have done well... The timelines were too tight to open schools in just under a week.

"There are some institutions where teachers will most probably arrive on Monday and we are concluding that a number of PPEs (personal protective equipment) will arrive today or tomorrow and over the weekend is when we will be able to distribute to some teachers."
