Lesufi visits torched schools in Soshanguve

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says he doesn’t believe the department’s former contract workers are responsible for the wave of torched schools.

Lesufi visited four schools in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, on Wednesday.

The schools have all been damaged by fires since the start of the 21-day lockdown, with some believing that contract workers could be responsible for the damage.
Lesufi told journalists that he cannot believe that a school could be torched by those paid through a government stipend.
Lesufi confirmed that some of the workers had their contracts annulled in March.
“Can somebody burn a school because they are not getting R800? We are just paying them a stipend, we aren’t paying them a salary.
“If somebody feels like their contract ended in March, and therefore they are not getting R800, and therefore they must come and burn the school is something I feel is naïve.
“I really don’t think that somebody who feels like, instead of getting R800 every month, the entire society must suffer and if they are people who are thinking that way, it is really unfortunate.”
