Makhura was speaking at the swearing-in of MECs in Parktown, Johannesburg on Thursday.

Makhura said he also believes Lesufi will be able to fight the scourge of corruption in the finance department.

"We want to help us expand the envelope od own revenue. Gauteng province is the only province that has raised so much of own revenue because we have been expanding the scope. The amount of money you get from central government is always limited and gets worse when the economy is not doing well.

"Second thing, he is the calibre of man I need to fight corruption. Clean governance is the key mandate of that portfolio. All the things about achieving clean audits require a senior leader."

Makhura says the introduction of the  online application system in education shows Lesufi is the perfect person to head up the e-Government system the province is introducing.

"The use of technology to modernise government is still new in government. What is our dream in Gauteng? We want people to access government services in their homes, on their handsets in their cars. You don't' have to go and queue at home affairs, with provincial government over the next five years we want to bring more services online."
