Lesufi: Work under way to stabilise coalition govts

The ANC’s Gauteng chairperson Panyaza Lesufi says work is under way to develop a coalition-specific framework to help stabilise multi-party governments across the province.

Lesufi spoke before the ANC-sponsored motion of no confidence against Ekurhuleni Mayor Tania Campbell passed in council on Wednesday. The ousting of Campbell followed a High Court ruling which saw Mpho Phalatse reinstated as mayor of Johannesburg – following her ouster earlier this month.

“We have already established a team on that will allow us to have some kind of framework, hopefully all political parties will adopt it. We have also established a process to appoint credible negotiators where there are differences we can unleash those negotiators,” Lesufi said, adding that such interventions could also save government the money it spends defending its decisions in court.

“Some of the things that we say are differences if you go around the table [you find] it’s just miscommunication. If you have credible negotiators, they can resolve them and save government money of going to courts and having these kind of motions when we need stability in our municipalities.”

Lesufi said the provincial government would not impose their preferred candidate to replace Campbell.

“If there is a best person that the coalition government says should lead this municipality, then who are we to stop that? But we are not going to say just because it’s the ANC and therefore we must get the mayoral committee or the mayor,’ he said.
