"No resource has been spared in responding to the situation," is the message from Liberty Holdings CEO David Munro, who has ensured clients that their information is safe following the attack on Thursday evening.

Cyber hackers gained control of Liberty's IT systems, threatening the protection of clients' personal information.

They then blackmailed the insurer - demanding a sum of money in exchange for the safe return of the documents taken.

"There was an extortion attempt on us, our data has been taken and they demanded a payment from us. As I said, we made no concession in that respect. I am not in a position to confirm the monetary value of the demand for payment as that is equally of interest to authorities," Munro told reporters at a press briefing in Braamfontein on Sunday evening.

He maintained that "there is no evidence that any of our customers suffered financial loss".

Although the company could not provide the exact extent of the breach, Munro said hackers are in possession of emails and attachments.

Investigations are at an advanced stage, but Munro vowed that the company "have gone to extreme lengths to secure our IT infrastructure to make sure our customers' data is protected".
