Limpopo govt warns over ‘illegal’ soccer tournaments

The provincial government in Limpopo has warned the organisers of soccer tournaments being staged in violation of the lockdown regulations.

Contact sport remains prohibited under level 3.


Limpopo’s MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Thandi Moraka says the tournaments are undermining efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19.


"We are making a call to all communities and organisers to desist from staffing soccer tournaments because it is still prohibited. Everyone should continue adhering to lockdown regulations of practice social distancing, sanitising and washing of hands at all times.”


At the same time Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has warned that police will be deployed to hotspots to enforce the regulations.


“We have received complaints from the public regarding tournaments that are staged under the critical level that we are currently observing.


“We have profiled all the hotspots and our law enforcers have been activated to enforce the regulations.”
