Limpopo municipal manager, former MP in court for theft, money laundering

The Municipal Manager of Molemole in Limpopo appeared in the Polokwane magistrate court on Monday on charges of theft and money laundering.

The 53-year-old Maphala Mosena appeared alongside a former member of parliament (MP), Moloko Stanfort Maila, as well as Lepota Eric Makgato and Manase Stephen Makgato. 


Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the province, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said the group is accused of siphoning close to R5 million.  


“The state, represented by Advocate Dalton Tshinyani, alleged that the accused were working together to steal the money amounting to R4, 8 million rand which was received by the Makgato Communal Property Association from the Land Claim Commission,” said  Malabi-Dzhangi.


She added: “The matter was postponed to Thursday, 8 October, for a formal bail application. All accused remain in custody.”

Her co-accused, Captain Aswin Narainpershad, was granted R10 000 bail. This relates to an R47 million corruption case involving Durban businessman Thoshan Panday and the SAPS. Panday and another police official, Colonel Navin Madhoe, were granted bail last week.
