According to the police 22 people have been arrested on charges of public violence and malicious damage to property after residents took to the streets, demanding the resignation of Mayor Sarah Monyamane.

"Streets were blocked and four structures were set alight. One of them was a house belonging to the husband of the Mayor and another belonged to councillors accused of being loyal to the Municipality," police said.

Police spokesperson Ronel Otto said members of the police also came under attack when petrol bombs were thrown at a Nyala vehicle.

"It did catch fire but the members were rescued and the fire extinguished before too much damage was caused," Otto said.

Otto said they received reports of a man who died of a bullet wound in the local clinic.

"He was taken there by members of the community, so it is not certain exactly where the shooting incident took place. It is also not certain who fired the shots. The IPID is investigating this incident," she said.

Otto added that they were also investigation reports of foreign shops being looted.

"The current situation is calm but tense with only a few roads inside the township blocked. POP members are deployed."
