Police in Limpopo have launched a manhunt for a group of protestors who assaulted seven people when they targeted a number of trucks and an ambulance during unrest on Wednesday night.

"It is alleged that a group of community members went on rampage and engaged in protest actions which obstructed the traffic flow," police say.

The unrest primarily occurred on the R511 between Northam and Brits.

Police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe said five trucks and one ambulance were highjacked - with protestors assaulting the truck and ambulance drivers.

Some of the victims were still in hospital on Thursday afternoon, said Ngoepe, calling on residents with information to come forward.

Authorities believe the estimated damage to be around R3 million.

No arrests have been made.
