LISTEN: 63% decline in cash-in-transit heists

Police minister Bheki Cele has revealed that there has been a 63% decline in cash-in-transit heists nationally between April and June.
Cele briefed the media with national police commissioner Khehla Sithole in Tembisa on Thursday.
They launched Operation Buya Mthetho, which is the police’s latest by-law enforcement operation.
“42 (suspects) in total have been arrested to date on cash heists including Willington “Bibi” Cenenda. he is in our hands now and he is linked to 23 cash heists and has stolen R46 million,” Cele said.
The minister said millions of rands stolen during the recent upsurge in heists has been recovered. Most of the cash was recovered in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape but the exact amount is yet to be confirmed.
“Out of that operation we have found 59 firearms and managed to retrieve 54 high performing vehicles that work on the feeding of these crimes.”
He said 47 explosive devices were also recovered.
Cele also confirmed since the start of Operation Buya Mthetho in Tembisa, 84 suspects were arrested for various crimes including four of the most-wanted criminals.
