[LISTEN] All South Africans must pay for RAF, says Fuel Retailers Association
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Fuel Retailers Association believes all South Africans should contribute towards the Road Accident Fund.
The comments by the association come ahead of another anticipated fuel price hike in April.
The skyrocketing fuel price is largely driven by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
CEO Reggie Sibiya says it's unfair that only 30% of the country's population contribute towards a fund that benefits everyone.
"We believe that if we broaden the insurance base and make it mandatory, it then reduces the flat rate that is collected by the RAF via fuel.

"This cover is for the entire population. This covers passengers sitting in taxis and when they have a disability they go and claim from this fund. It covers pedestrians who, when they are hit by a car, there is a disability claim."
Sibiya also adds the RAF contribution should be removed from the fuel levy and moved to the Transport Department.
"We then need to come up with solutions on how we reduce the burden from a limited number of people. Scrap it from fuel because it doesn't belong there. You can look at other options like licence renewals and the compensation fund."
Last week, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that motorists are in for a fuel reprieve for the next two months.
He announced that the fuel levy would be reduced by R1.50 in the coming months.
