Parts of Johannesburg Central are still without power, almost a week after a fire ripped through an underground tunnel.

The cause of the fire remains largely unknown.

Persistent rainfall over the weekend is believed to have stalled repairs to the tunnel, as well as between the Central and Selby substations.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says teams ware working around the clock to restore power areas that are still in the dark.

This includes Village Main, Wemmer South feeding from Selby Substation, Westgate, and some streets within the CBD, Ntemi Piliso, part of Anderson, part of Commissioner, part of Marshal, part of Main Street feeding off the Central substation.

“The switch on will happen gradually between the areas fed from Selby and Central substations to avoid overloading the circuit,” says Mangena.

Areas that have been switched on include Village Deep, Heidelberg Road, Wermer Central, WNLA Hospital, New Centre, and Selby.

“The teams however worked hard around the clock to ensure everything is completed and power is restored,” Mangena adds.
