The Democratic Alliance (DA)'s Gauteng provincial leader, John Moodey, has already met with the mayor of the City of Tshwane, Stevens Mokgalapa, in the wake of a controversial audio recording.

The recording, circulated widely over the weekend, seems to be of Mokgalapa and Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, councillor Sheila Senkubuge, discussing upcoming court cases and also seems to bear evidence of a sexual relationship between the two.

"Unless that tape recording is really examined by an expert I cannot come to any conclusion or deny that maybe sex did take place there," says Moodey.

However, he notes: "A person needs to look at the fact that when you hold public office, integrity is of the essence."

"The discussion that took place there, even if it was a private conversation between the mayor and his colleague, some of the utterances brings into question collegiality in the caucus," says Moodey.

Moodey says the scandal could not have come at a worse time for the DA whose coalitions in Gauteng are in a perilous position.

He says it seems the audio was already recorded in October, but only released now through blackmail.

"A person needs to look at the timing of the release of this tape - it is very well-timed," says Moodey.

"There are politics at play. So it does complicate the situation. But believe you me, as the DA, we will not be blackmailed by any political organisation or individual," says Moodey.

Moodey says Mokgalapa has laid charges of extortion and invasion of privacy "against some known and unknown individuals at the Brooklyn police station as well as with the Hawks."

The DA’s Federal legal commission has also been tasked to conduct an internal investigation into the matter.
