LISTEN: Firing people won’t solve vaccine hesitancy, warns Cosatu
Updated | By Eva Chipa
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) believes firing workers who refuse to vaccinate will cause more harm than good.
This follows the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) ruling in favour of Goldrush Group which sacked an employee for refusing to get the jab.
Spokesperson Matthew Parks says although they support government’s call for citizens to vaccinate, they are against dismissals.
“Cosatu is extremely disappointed by the ruling of the CMMA to uphold dismal of a worker who refused to vaccinate.
“We will always oppose the dismal of any worker we have an unemployment rate of 46%.”

Parks says workers not only have to take care of themselves but also their families, many of whom have lost wages and jobs.
“Dismissing workers for not vaccinating is merely going to poison the waters.
“It’s not going to resolve matters, its going to create tensions in the workplace and undermine labour market stability.”
