SA’s Covid-19 death tolls breaches the 95 000 mark

South Africa has now passed the grim milestone of over 95 000 people succumbing to Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says that latest mortality cases reported on Sunday, include backlog cases which have now emerged.
“This is due to an ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health.
“The number of deaths due to Covid-19 has been reported as 117, however only 15 occurred in the past 24 to 48 hours. This brings the total fatalities to 95 022,” reads a statement by the NICD.
The institute reports a further 2 226 new Covid-19 cases in South Africa.
“This brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 603 856. This increase represents a 9.5% positivity rate.”
There has also been an increase of 23 new hospital admissions in the last 24 hour reporting cycle.
“Currently public hospitals account for the highest number of admissions standing at 3 027, while the private sector accounts for 2 456.”
