Environmental groups opposing fracking in the Karoo, are set to argue in the North Gauteng High Court on Tuesday why government should not allow this method of extracting oil or gas.
The North Gauteng High Court will hear an application today by Afriforum and the Treasure Karoo Action Group against the Ministers of Mineral Resources and Environmental Affairs.
They want the court to set aside the regulations on Petroleum Exploration and Production promulgated in 2015 which provide for hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in South Africa.
The two organisations maintain that the regulations are unlawful.
They say the hearing is similar to the one heard in the Eastern Cape High Court hearing last year when members of a local farming community succeeded in their application to set aside the same regulations.
Treasure Karoo Action Group CEO, Jonathan Deal, says they're reasonably confident that they will be successful on at least one of the grounds of the review.
