[LISTEN] Olympic win hasn’t sunk in, admits Schoenmaker

South Afica’s new golden girl Tatjana Schoenmaker says her victory at the Olympic Games in Tokyo has yet to sink in.

Schoenmaker won gold in the 200m breast stroke in Tokyo, while earlier bagging a silver medal in the 100m discipline.
“I don’t think so, I haven’t been on my phone,” she said on her arrival at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday.
“I did go off social media just to focus on my competition. I still have a lot of messages to reply so I haven’t been reading any news or anything so I think that is why it hasn’t sunk in.”

Schoenmaker said although she was disappointed at not bagging a gold medal in 100m, it has made her more motivated than ever before.
“It was very disappointing. I wouldn’t be where I am today and the person I am today. It’s something I needed to learn and a lesson that I needed to go. It made me more motivated to go for the next one. Not just try and qualify but try and make the finals and perhaps win the gold.”
