"They would have won the election. So I am glad that our election is over - Siya Kolisi could have been the President. And Rassie Erasmus would have been the Minister of Finance," joked Ramaphosa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed the Springboks' victory in the 2019 Rugby World Cup, joking that he is very grateful too not have a political opponent in Siya Kolisi.

"If we were about to hold an election, I have no doubt that the entire rugby team would be in Cabinet. They would be in Parliament," said a smiling Ramaphosa at the Union Buildings as the Springboks kicked off their Gauteng victory parade.

"They would have won the election. So I am glad that our election is over - Siya Kolisi could have been the President. And Rassie Erasmus would have been the Minister of Finance," joked Ramaphosa.

"So it's good that we don't' have an election - I don't have to compete with Siya Kolisi now."

The President went on to say the national team should savour the moment and their success in uniting the nation behind them.
