The City of Cape Town’s MMC for Water and Sanitation Zahid Badroodien says he was alerted to the incident on Saturday.

“So on Saturday evening, Sunday morning, reports of sewage flowing on two parts of our beach was brought to my attention.

“Immediately the officials were dispatched to investigate the source of this leak.”

Badroodien says investigations found that the pump station pumps had tripped.

“Those pumps needed to be initiated in order for the sewage to stop flowing.

“So thankfully the teams yesterday were able to replace the pumps and the environmental teams together with city health made the decision to close only part beach.

“Our teams will be going out today (Monday) again to assess around whether or not the beach can be fully opened this morning.”

Badroodien added that the pump station is active and there's no sewage on the beach as it has already been cleaned up.
