Private investigator Mike Bolhuis believes money could have played a role in the death of former Bafana Bafana striker Marc Batchelor.

Batchelor, who is also a former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs player, was gunned in Olivedale, north of Johannesburg on Monday night.

He was shot while turning onto the driveway of his home.

Speculation is rife that the killing could have been be a hit due to nothing being stolen. The gardener - who was a passenger - was also unharmed.

This has in turn led to speculation that the killing could be linked to the underworld.

"If you live by the sword, you die by the sword. The kind of hit that was done on him is a hit that was recently - especially in Johannesburg - done via motorbike. It's very easy to come with motorbikes. It's small, it goes in quickly and leaves quickly and they just stop and shoot," says Bolhuis.

"It's not some random guys who drove past. They would have contracted and received a deposit and then the full amount. They will obviously follow-up to make sure that it was achieved. This is planned. This is organised and it could be that it is people that he knew."

"This is all about money. But usually, when there's a serious hit like this, they will use somebody from the outside just to make 100% sure there would be no form of recognition. Needless to say these people will be held in such a way - by those who have hired them - in captivity that they wouldn't talk or come forward."

Bolhuis says Batchelor may have been involved in a scam which ultimately cost him his life.

"Marc is dead because he had trouble, serious trouble regarding money - in our opinion - with some person or entity. That's the reason why he's dead. He did not pay. He owed a lot of money. He is an arrogant guy and has many a time showed an attitude of being untouchable and this is, in my opinion, has cost his life."
