As South Africans mark the Workers' Day public holiday, the South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) says load shedding is adding to workers' woes.

Amid high interest rates and sky-high inflation for basic goods, "load shedding is making things far worse," says the union's Zwelinzima Vavi.

"The investment strike by the private and public sectors is making us to be trapped in a very low growth path," he says.

"The levels of investment have now plummeted to 14% from 22% in 2008 - now, that's a disaster."

Saftu will be holding May Day rallies throughout the country on Monday.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the African National Congress (ANC) will be holding a Workers' Day event in the Western Cape.
