Load shedding makes dreaded return on Monday afternoon
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
Residents and businesses will have to brace rolling blackouts again from Monday afternoon.
Eskom announced it would implement stage 2 load shedding at 5pm.
This after multiple generating unit failures over the past 24 hours.
A unit each at the Matla, Kendal, Matimba, Kusile and Grootvlei power stations tripped, while a unit each at Arnot and Hendrina power stations were forced shut down on Monday morning, while unit 3 at Medupi tripped later in the day.
Other units had also tripped at various power stations at the weekend, reducing available generation capacity, forcing Eskom to rely heavily on emergency generation reserves to keep the lights on
The power utility will suspend load shedding at 5am on Tuesday
“This will be repeated same time on Tuesday night until 05:00 on Wednesday,” said Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha.
“This load shedding is required in order for Eskom to replenish the emergency generation reserves, which have been utilised significantly since the past weekend.”
Mantshantsha warned power cuts might be required at short notice, should there be any further significant breakdowns.
Total breakdowns amount to 14 508MW while planned maintenance is 6 307MW of capacity as we continue with the reliability maintenance.
