The donations come as millions of South Africans continue to grapple with food insecurity.

According to Statistics South Africa, of the nearly 17,9 million households in the country in 2021, almost 80 per cent reported that they had adequate access to food, while 15 per cent and 6 per cent stated that they had either inadequate or severely inadequate access to food.

In 2021, two-thirds of these households were in urban areas, and almost half a million of them were found in the country’s largest cities, Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The organisation donated potatoes to various provinces in South Africa.

The organisation's founder, Gilbert Martin, said We Are South Africans managed to feed a million people through their potato drive.

"The main reason we are doing the potato drive is to rescue people. People presume that Johannesburg is the economic hub of the country, which is true, but most families here are not able to put food on the table.

"We know there are needs out there, and through these potato drives, we have managed to donate to all nine provinces so that no one is left out.”
