‘Serial killer’ Mkhwanazi’s confession admitted as evidence
Updated | By Masechaba Sefularo
The main trial in the case of multiple murder accused Sifiso Mkhwanazi resumed on Friday, with his father, Mark Khumalo, back on the stand.
Judge Cassim Moosa on Friday ruled on the trial-within-a-trial that the confession Mkhwanazi made to his father may be admitted as evidence.
On Thursday, proceedings in the trial-within-a-trial were postponed after the accused's lawyer, Vuyolethu Maqetuka, called in sick.
Mkhwanazi is on trial in the High Court sitting in Palm Ridge for rape and murder after the bodies of six women were found at his father’s car repair shop in Johannesburg.
The 22-year-old was arrested in 2021 after a sex worker accused him of rape after what he claims to have been a disagreement on the fee.
His father told the court he learned, during his son’s confession to the murders of six women the following year, that the 10 months in jail for the initial charge sent Mkhwanazi on a dark mission.
However, the accused has denied raping any of the victims or that the murders were premeditated.
In his admission, the accused said rage and fear drove him to kill.
The trial continues.
