Lucky escape for family after car washes off Centurion bridge

A family of three had a lucky escape when their SUV was washed off a low-water bridge in Centurion on Monday.
Tshwane emergency services said the man and two teenagers managed to swim to safety after the vehicle was washed off the End Avenue Bridge into the river.
Persistent rain in Gauteng has led to localised flooding in several parts of the province, with government declaring a national disaster on Monday.
Floods have hit seven of the nine provinces, damaging roads and bridges and leaving at least seven people dead.
Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the driver of the SUV apparently drove around the barricades used to close the road.

“This has been the second incident in the same area in not more than two days. An Isuzu bakkie, which has still not been recovered from the Hennops River, was washed away on Saturday.
“Under the command of the SAPS K9 and Diving Unit and subject to safe conditions, the Emergency Services Department will resume the search for about five people who were reported to the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services as being swept away at a stream in Olievenhoutbosch on Saturday.”
Persistent rain has led to flooding of informal settlements in parts of Mamelodi, Atteridgeville, Soshanguve and Cullinan.
Multiple roads in the southern, eastern and western parts of Tshwane experienced some flooding.
