In August last year, the Johannesburg Roads Agency started a R58 million emergency repairs to sections of the motorway after an assessment revealed that the structural integrity of the concrete elements were severely reduced.

Outgoing mayor Herman Mashaba says the bridge will be open from 5 am on Monday.

Mashaba says while he understands motorists’ frustrations the closure was necessary.

"I wish once again to apologise to the residents of Johannesburg and every other motorist that had to endure the frustration of closing the key link in our city.

"Despite your frustrations, I hope you realise what a necessary and life saving undertaking this was."

Mashaba says the condition of roads in the city is a matter of concern.

"Ladies and gentlemen, with over 900 bridges and only 6% of them in good condition it is no wonder they are crumbling to the point of requiring emergency repairs."

Mashaba won't be on the bridge when it reopens, but Gauteng Premier David Makhura said he would be there to ensure smooth operations.
