In Mabuza’s absence the country has seen bouts of load shedding, an intense third wave of Covid-19 infections and a bout of unrest which caused hundreds of businesses to close their doors.

As the leader of on the ministerial committee on vaccines, leader of government businesses and the chairperson of a task team on Eskom, Mabuza has been absent during a crucial time in the country’s history.

This has raised speculation that the deputy president might be one of the victims when President Cyril Ramaphosa eventually decides to reshuffle his cabinet.

Political analyst Ralph Mathekga says it might not be as far-fetched as some people think, due to his recurring health issues.

“Well, I don’t think it is a far- fetched idea, given that the deputy president has been taking health related leave and he has done it quite a few times to the point where there’s always questions as to whether he is able to perform his job.”

Mathekga says the state of Mabuza’s health may not allow him to do a demanding job.

“Quite often before he even appears in Parliament there are always reports that his appearance in Parliament is long overdue . . . but from what seems to be the case regarding on how he has been kept away from work, one also could assume that it certainly has to do with health. If it continues to be a recurring problem . . . the state of his health may not allow him to consider other things such as the demanding job a of being the deputy president."

Mabuza is set to arrive in the country on Wednesday but no details surrounding his arrival have been shared by his office.
