Deputy president David Mabuza used the commemoration of Solomon Mahlangu’s execution to address issues such as racism and land reform.

Deputy president David Mabuza says Solomon Mahlangu and Winnie-Madikizela risked their all in the pursuit of freedom.

Mabuza was speaking at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Tshwane.

Today marks exactly 39 years since the Umkhonto we Sizwe combatant was executed by the apartheid regime.

“Our profound sadness over his violent murder at this very place on the dawn of April 6th, 39 years ago, is also amplified by the sad passing of yet another who risked everything so we could live under conditions of freedom. We refer here to comrade Winnie Nomzamo Madikizela Mandela.

"These are some of the heroes and leaders who represents an embodiment of our struggle. The journey the country has traveled - they have all played their different roles.”

Mabuza says Solomon Mahlangu is a reminder that the struggle is not yet won.

“We can’t fail now. Their thinking at that time represents the best of minds. They could differentiate between right and wrong and stick to what is right. No matter what.

“So we are calling upon leadership of young people to stand up and fight the remaining ills. We need to fight racism, we need to fight sexism, we need to fight poverty. We need to fight unemployment, which is so pervasive.”

Mabuza also addressed the issue of land reform, calling on white South Africans to listen to their conscience and and share the land with their fellow South Africans.
