President Cyril Ramaphosa was initially due to present the keynote address but withdrew following ill health.

Ramaphosa’s second-in-command will lead the delegation expected to grapple with the challenges facing the health sector.

The summit will convene on Friday and Saturday at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.

Stakeholders from various constituencies in the sector will attend the two-day summit.

The controversial National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme is expected to be one of the key focus points.

“A particular focus (will be placed) on the recently gazetted National Health Insurance Bill and the Medical Schemes Amendment Bill, where the President reiterated the commitment of the South African Government to strengthening the health system, including through the progressive implementation of NHI,” says the Presidency.

Ramaphosa’s also had to cancel a scheduled question and answer session in Parliament on Thursday due to health concerns.

His office previously said that he is busy recovering from an upper respiratory tract infection.
