Madonsela's advice for new Public Protector
Updated | By Silindelo Masikane
Outgoing public protector Thuli Madonsela has advised her successor to always have the interests of the public at heart.
The National Assembly will today vote for a new Public Protector, with Busisiwe Mkhwebane the preferred candidate.
Madonsela steps down in October, when her seven-year, non-renewable term expires.
The public protector committee’s report will be debated by the National Assembly today.
Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s name must be endorsed by 60 percent or 240 of the 400 Members of Parliament and will then be sent to President Jacob Zuma, who will confirm the appointment.

Madonsela says her next job, in social justice, only starts in 2018, but in the meantime she will be engaged with civil society work, lecturing and practicing as a lawyer.
She had some advice for her successor.
"My advice to my successor would be: The job is about protecting the public from improper conduct in state affairs from whatever quarter it may come from. Stick to that job," Madonsela said.
