Mahube Valley residents call on mayor to evict illegal land invaders
Updated | By Samkele Maseko
Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga says the escalating tensions between residents of Mahube Valley living in formal housing - and those living in shacks needs to be resolved.
Msimanga met with the community on Wednesday night following earlier protests by residents over what they perceive as the mushrooming of informal settlements.
Mahube residents told Msimanga that the value of their homes have depreciated due to the erection of some 4000 shacks, and warned the mayor to resolve the issue before it leads to a loss of life.
The residents living in formal housing made it clear to Msimanga that he needs to remove the shacks, but the mayor says there are some legal obstacles.
Msimanga warns that residents cannot decide to no longer pay their rates and taxes, as this would leave them open to prosecution.
