Major traffic delays in Pretoria and Joburg due to protests

Gauteng Police confirmed the situation in the Johannesburg CBD is still tense after the red ants evicted illegal residents from a "hi-jacked" building.

The police's Kay Makhubele says the residents started pelting members of the red ants with their personal belongings, causing a road obstruction.

"Jeppe street is still blocked with traffic officers who are directing motorists," he says.

Makhubele says at least one suspect was arrested after allegedly assaulting a traffic official in Jeppe street.

"Resident threw their belongings from the building into the street and this is causing major traffic back-ups. We are trying to clear the road," he says.

In Pretoria, residents of Mamelodi, east of the city, took to the streets on Thursday morning blockading Solomon Mahlangu road.

"We have tried to push the people back in order to clear the road," he says.

He says members of the community took to the streets demanding better services.

"We are urging motorists to make use of alternative routes until the situation is under control," he says.
