Make or break meetings in volatile Hermanus
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Top government officials are scheduled to meet with Hermanus community members following a spate of land grabs, violence and destruction of property in the small Overberg town.
A police station and vehicles were set alight during ongoing protest that sparked land invasions at the weekend.
More than 40 people have been arrested for the illegal occupation of land and public violence.
Western Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, is expected to engage with the protesters on Tuesday afternoon.
Provincial police spokesperson, Donovan Heilbron, says Madikizela will address mayor Andries Franken, the municipal manager and representatives of the community.
Heilbron says government officials are expected to provide the disgruntled Overberg residents with proposed solutions to the current crisis.
In the latest incident, a privately owned vehicle was torched on Monday afternoon.
More police have been deployed to the area.
The situation in the small town remains tense.
