President Cyril Ramaphosa has joined political parties and ordinary South Africans in paying tribute to the late Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo.
Makhubo passed away to Covid-19 related complications on Friday.
He served as the MMC for Finance and then became mayor of Johannesburg in 2019 after his predecessor Herman Mashaba resigned from office.
Ramaphosa says Makhubo's passing is a big blow for the residents of the city.
"The passing of Mayor Makhubo is a stark reminder of the threat posed by this deadly pandemic against which we are all extremely vulnerable.
"Losing Councillor Makhubo at such a difficult time for the City of Johannesburg and the country is a blow. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and with his colleagues at this difficult time."
He also lauded Makhubo as a champion of Covid-19 safety.
"Since he received his own diagnosis in June this year, Mayor Makhubo regularly posted public health messages urging people to take responsibility for their own safety and that of others."
