The Department of Education confirmed that 32 989 parents have successfully applied by 09.50am on Tuesday morning.

Registration opened at 08.00am.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi was joined by Premier David Makhura in Orange Farm.

They urged parents to ask for help from officials if they cannot access the Internet.

Some parents have complained about not being able to register their children at the school of their choice due to capacity issues.

Makhura has urged parents to apply early, to avoid this.

"If a parent says I live here, the nearest school to me is that school...in the system, if the parent comes too late, by that time the school is full. Doing it early gives parents the opportunity to choose schools," says Makhura.

Makhura says placement is easy once applications are sorted.

"We don't want to sit with 30 000 learners who are not place in January, because that creates anxiety for the system and for parents. It makes it difficult for us to plan. We need to know in advance how many additional classrooms we will need," says Makhura.
