Lipudi died at Helen Joseph hospital in Johannesburg on Sunday morning following a short illness.

Speaking outside the home, Makhura said he was saddened by the loss of an old friend.

"Certainly the people of our province, the people of West Rand, and the communities of Mogale City have lost a great servant of the people in the person of mayor Patrick Naga Lipudi.

"I have known the mayor for quite a long time. Me and him served together as secretaries.”

Makhura described Lipudi as a man of integrity.

"He was always humble, he was dedicated, he was hardworking, he was principled and he has a great deal of integrity.

"He carried himself, he conducted himself, carried out his work to approximate the values of the ANC."

Lipudi became the mayor in June 2017 after the African National Congress (ANC) wrestled back control of the municipality from the Democratic Alliance (DA).

The family is yet to announce funeral arrangements.
